Meet Sharon Butler, DCSRN Parent

The quality rating of the school Shante would have attended without DCSRN’s intervention.

Sharon Butler is a parent in Ward 5 with a rising 9th grader. Sharon is excited for her daughter, Shantae, to attend high school, and values the great experience that Shantae had at her elementary and middle school, School Without Walls at Francis-Stevens. An avid basketball player, Shantae also enjoys her English class, and took advantage of a coding camp at SWWFS, where she became interested in computers and technology.

For Sharon, finding a diverse environment for Shantae is a priority, familiarizing her with a wealth of cultural identities and experiences. Her daughter also values the quality teachers that she has at SWWFS, and finding a high school that also places such an emphasis on teacher excellence is extremely important.

"I don't think that I would have been able to get the application done all the way and know the information or what qualifications Shante had without DCSRN's help."
– Sharon Butler

The high school application process, however, presented Sharon with many challenges, and she sought out DCSRN’s support. She connected with one of DCSRN’s parent advocates who went through the variety of high schools that Shantae could apply to and helped Sharon narrow down the list. With the advocate’s support, Sharon was able to apply to several quality high schools, including The SEED School, Eastern High School, and BASIS DC. Sharon feels much more confident as a result of DCSRN’s assistance, and thinks that Shantae has a better chance of getting into a quality school that matches her high expectations than she did before.
